Open Xchange Overview

|
The Open Xchange system is based on two popular open-source mail programs - the Postfix mail transport agent and Cygnus POP and Imap email server - and is managed by a simple Web-based interface, which is hosted by an Apache Web server.

While OpenXchange server is based on open-source technologies, it also includes the Comfire commercial communications software, which provides support for groupware functions such as the address book and calendar.

The WebDAV interface also enables the exchange of data sets from project management, ERP, and CRM applications with the OpenXchange Server, automatically integrating key project deadlines and tasks into appointment and task management tools, removing the need to maintain multiple calendars. if you truly want or already depend on Outlook, you can use it via the WebDAV/XML connector application and get full calendaring and conflict management capabilities.

OpenXchange can be installed on systems already running a version of linux. However integrating exsisting systems can be time consuming and completed. It is advisable to set up the system as a dedicated server. While Openexchange is comparatively uncomplicated, small-business owners will still probably want a consultant or VAR completing the initial installation and configuration, especially if their businesses need any customization or additional applications installed.

The architecture ties some core networking components directly into the OpenXchange administrative platform. DNS and LDAP are good examples of applications that should be changed only through Openexchange.and not edited or manipulated at the Linux OS level unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Access to the calendar should be possible with ical clients like the Mozilla Calendar, ICAL, etc. over the build-in WebDAV/XML interface which provides also an ical interface.

OpenXchange Server 5.0 includes a web-based distributed authoring and versioning (WebDAV) interface and Outlook connector to speed information flows.

Outlook only does MAPI and the plugin translates that to XML, and sends it to the

webdav-interface

- openexchange provides different views
- openexchange provides different access rights for different appointments of the same user
- openexchange saves one appointment even if the appointment has multiple participants
- Support for a free busy interface
